Bright Rug On Hardwood

Let’s Talk Rugs: Add That Little Something Extra to Your Home for Cheap

Nothing can add pizzazz and visual impact to a room like a stylish area or accent rug. With neutral leathers and upholstery still popular in basic furniture pieces, a fun way to add some color and flair to the home is through the use of strategically selected rugs. This is one of the many inexpensive ways to pop some color into those neutral rooms in your home.

Rugs: A Décor Accessory

Before you begin the hunt for the perfect area rugs, runners, and accent rugs, decide on your general décor theme. Are you striving for chic or casual? Funky or formal? Rustic or rich and luxurious? With that starting point, and depending on the furnishings you retain or will buy, decide on a color palette. If you decide to keep the major pieces and wall color neutral, then the sky’s the limit on what you can do with accessories, including rugs.

A bold rug can completely change the vibe of a bland “vanilla” room by adding in some color or pattern. Adding a splash of color via an area rug is a great design touch, the color then repeated in other décor flourishes and accents. For the room that just wants to be neutral, try adding a bold Moroccan trellis print in a different shade that compliments the neutral color scheme.

The theme of a room can shift from modern to rustic to cottage to Euro with the addition of a rug. Using color and pattern that defines the theme you are going for, the rug can actually set the décor tone for the entire space and ground the room. Sometimes, just purchasing a really stylish rug is all the money you need to spend to see a blah room spring to life.

The use of small accent rugs are an excellent way to draw attention to a defined space or to highlight an architectural feature, such as a kid’s homework station or a built-in reading nook. For a few dollars, you can add some colorful flair to a small space.

Add a Trendy Twist with a Bold Area Rug

The 2018 Pantone color of the year is Ultra Violet 18-3838, a bold, vibrant shade of purple. Why not select one room in the house to add a pop of this exciting hue by selecting an area rug in the trendy color? A color that strong must be used sparingly, so maybe just a throw pillow or vase in the same shade that will play off the ultra violet area rug will suffice.

Eclectic decor themes continue to proliferate, and a carefully chosen area rug can add just the right juxtaposition between design elements. You might have a stark, modern room with clean lines, monochromatic furnishings, and a minimalist theme…so go ahead and add a large cowhide skin for an area rug, instantly giving the room interest, character, and warmth.

Types of Rug Materials and Piles

The primary materials used for area rugs include:

  • Wool
  • Silk
  • Cotton
  • Hide
  • Flat Weaves

The pile, or height of the fibers, varies dramatically between these different rug materials. Wool rugs can be made with high piles or low and is still the standard bearer for durability and softness. However, wool rugs do tend to be pricier. Often you can find a similar pattern in a synthetic rug material for half the price.

Flat weaves made of cotton and natural fibers are still very popular and are great in a coastal decor themed room. Both cotton and natural rugs are quite affordable and still get the punch needed to complete the desired look in the space.

Animal skins, such as cowhides or sheepskin, add a quirky touch to a room, and synthetic versions are available that can mimic the look.

Rugs have always played a practical role in a home, providing warmth, sound reduction, and hardwood protection, so make the most of your area rugs by also using them as a decor accessory.

Adding an inexpensive but attractive area rug not only gives any room that ‘wow factor’ but can also enhance the overall appearance of your space. Go ahead, jump in with both feet and try a new rug!
