Windows, Floors & Decor is in the business of providing excellent carpet and flooring for homes around the Greater Kansas City area. In all of our years, we’ve amassed a lengthy list of tips for carpet care. Here are our Top Ten Carpet Care Tips:

Tip #1: Entrance Mats

Use entrance mats to prevent dirt and wet grime from soiling your carpet at the doorways. A good dirt-protection plan can stop dirt before it gets into your home.

Tip #2: Take Off Your Shoes

Take off your shoes to save the wear and tear on your carpet. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to ask family members or guests to leave their shoes at the door.

Tip #3: Weekly Vacuuming

Make the most out of your weekly vacuuming. Don’t neglect stairs or corners and crevices where dirt collects and easily shows.

Tip #4: Change Your Air Filters

Change your furnace air filters every four months (with the seasons is a good way to remember) and find a filter that removes pollen, dust and other airborne particles.

Tip #5: Rearrange Your Furniture

Rearrange your furniture periodically to help even the wear on your carpet that comes from heavy furniture compression. Sofas, bookcases, pianos and tables will all leave lasting marks on your carpet if you do not move them from time to time.

Tip #6: Blot Spills Immediately

Concerning spills: Immediately blot up as much of the liquid as possible with a dry cloth. Do not rub or scrub the stained area with a rag, as this may permanently damage the carpet fibers.

Tip #7: Buy Cleaning Products with the CRI Seal Of Approval

Arm yourself against stubborn stains and spots before they happen. You can find a number of carpet cleaning products with the CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) Seal of Approval at your local stores. Have them ready to fight carpet stains when they occur.

Tip #8: Out of Cleaning Products? DIY!

In a pinch, you can address paint, food stains, and blood stains with a mixture made from 1/4 teaspoon clear dishwashing liquid in one cup of cold water. Blot and dry quickly to remove the stain.

Tip #9: Rubbing Alcohol > Ink

Ink from a ballpoint pen can be removed with rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Use 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and don’t pour the rubbing alcohol directly on the spot.

Tip #10: Pet Messes < Vinegar

For pet urine spots, use a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Blot and let dry. Repeat as needed.
