Allergens cause chaos in everyone’s lives, especially those who are susceptible to dust allergies. If you have been trying to create a home with little or no allergens in it, so as to keep your allergies to a minimum, there are a few things that you can do to help. Here is a list of some of the different things that you can do to help keep your home as allergen-free as possible.

If You Have Carpet, It Has Got to Go

One of the largest holder of allergens in a home is the carpeting. Any type of a rug or carpeted surface can hold on to things like dust, hair, old pieces of skin, and pet dander. Each of these things can kick a person’s allergies into overdrive. The best thing to do is to replace the carpeting in your home with either vinyl flooring, or hardwood floors.

Keep Air Filters Nice and Clean

If you only use the filter in your furnace, make sure that you are changing it regularly. If you have other air filters around your home, make sure that they are either being replaced at least as often as the manufacturer recommends, or rinsed off if that is the type of filtration you have. The cleaner those filters remain, the less allergens you have around your home in general.

Wash Your Linens Often

You should go through and wash all of the different parts of your bed often. This should include the pillow cases, sheets, comforter, and even your bed skirt if you have one. Ideally, you should also cover your mattress with an allergen-reducing cover, and that should be washed in the loads of laundry for your bed as well. They should be washed in warm water, and dried at or above 130 degrees, as this will help to kill off the allergens more efficiently.

Wipe Off Flat Surfaces a Few Times Each Week

Another way to keep the levels of allergens in your home down is to walk around with a damp cloth, and wipe up all of your flat surfaces at least 2-3 times a week. This should include the tops of appliances, shelves, tables, windowsills, countertops, and anything else that lies still during the day and has dust settle on it. The more dust you can capture in that damp cloth, the less will float around your home and into your body.
