Your carpet is a big investment.  You want it to last a long time.  Cleaning can help to extend its life, but sadly it’s not meant to last forever.  Here are some key signs that it’s time for a carpet replacement.

Wear and Tear

Over time, carpet begins to wear down.  Depending on how many people you have in your home, and whether or not there are children in the home, the speed at which this occurs and how many wear spots there are varies.  These worn spots are more susceptible to tearing.  Small tears can be repaired by a professional.  Large tears may not be, however.  And a carpet with significant wear just looks bad, making the room less inviting.  To restore the space back to an environment that people love to be in and that you are proud to show off, it may be time for carpet replacement.

Stains

Carpets are natural spill magnets.  Many carpets are installed with a stain resistant finish, but this finish doesn’t last forever.  Some stains can easily be removed by the homeowner, while others require a carpet cleaning professional.  There are some stains, however, that are impossible to remove, such as bleach.  Others include stains that the owner tried to remove themselves but botched.  These stains can be covered by furniture, but you can only Feng Shui the living room so many times before you run out of objects to use as covers.  And if you have pets, you face other potential issues.  While the strain itself can easily be removed if you act quickly, you aren’t always home to catch the stain as it happens.  These stains absorb into the carpet padding, eventually leading mold and mildew under the carpet.

Odors

Carpets absorb smells, creating some funky scents in your home.  Many smells can be removed by a carpet cleaning service, removing those off-smells from the atmosphere.  If your nose doesn’t notice an improvement in air quality after a good cleaning, the smells could have absorbed into the padding, or even the subfloor, underneath. This is a big sign that you need a carpet replacement.

Allergies

Have you noticed recently that your eyes water more?  Is your nose or chest significantly more congested?  If so, your carpet may be to blame.  If your symptoms don’t increase after a professional cleaning, it could mean that mold and mildew have taken hold of the areas underneath the carpet, making them impossible to remove without taking it up.

Age

Carpets are not meant to last forever.  Properly maintained, you can expect to get at least ten good years out of it.  After that, it naturally begins to show its age.  It can begin to experience color loss and fading.  The padding underneath also begins to show signs of aging.  The pad is the carpets support, making it comfortable to walk on.  As the carpet and padding begin to age, the support declines.  It becomes uneven and makes sounds when you walk over it.  Old carpet can decrease the value of your home.  Replacing it keeps the value up as well as ensuring your house looks its best.

You want your carpet to last, so you clean it often. While cleaning allows the carpet a longer life, it can’t make it live forever.  Wear and tear, stains, odors, and time can all take their toll on your carpet.  If your carpet looks like it’s been through some rough times and cleaning is no longer fitting the bill, it may be time to consider a carpet replacement.
